ShankuChakra Protocol
SCP-010 — Turmeric Quality Protocol
Revision date: 2026-09-01
ShankuChakra recommended operational protocol — this is not an official government or international standard.
Purpose
To provide a structured quality-verification process specific to turmeric shipments, given the product-specific parameters (curcumin content, colour, moisture) that most influence buyer acceptance.
Scope
Applies to turmeric shipments, whole finger or powder, from sample approval through pre-shipment inspection.
Definitions
- Curcumin content
- The percentage of curcumin (the primary pigment compound) in turmeric, commonly used as a quality and pricing benchmark.
Required Information
- Agreed minimum curcumin content
- Finger vs. powder requirement
- Moisture and foreign matter limits
- Mesh size, if powder
Procedure
- Confirm the buyer's required minimum curcumin content in writing as part of the product specification — this varies by application and should not be assumed.
- Confirm finger vs. powder requirement, and mesh size if powder, as these affect processing and packaging decisions.
- Test the approved sample for curcumin content, moisture and foreign matter before buyer sign-off (see the Sample Approval Protocol).
- At pre-shipment stage, re-test a representative sample from the packed consignment for the same parameters and compare to the approved reference sample.
- Document any deviation from the agreed curcumin content or other parameters and resolve with the buyer before sealing the shipment.
Checklist
- Minimum curcumin content agreed in writing
- Finger/powder and mesh size (if applicable) confirmed
- Moisture and foreign matter tested against agreed limits
- Pre-shipment sample compared against approved reference sample
Documents Required
- Product specification sheet
- Sample test results (curcumin, moisture, foreign matter)
- Pre-shipment inspection report
Risks
- Curcumin content below the agreed minimum discovered only after shipment
- Mismatched finger/powder or mesh size relative to buyer's processing needs
- Moisture levels increasing quality-deterioration risk during transit
Common Mistakes
- Agreeing to supply turmeric without a specific curcumin percentage in writing
- Not confirming mesh size for powder orders, leading to a product unsuitable for the buyer's processing line
- Skipping re-testing of curcumin content at the pre-shipment stage
Verification Points
- Is the minimum curcumin content documented as a specific figure, tested and confirmed at pre-shipment?
- Does the finger/powder form and mesh size match what the buyer specified?
- Are moisture and foreign matter within the agreed limits at the pre-shipment sample stage?
